History
- SANGITASARA of VIDYARANYA is regarded as fore runner of current system (around 600 ad)
- in the mid 17th century VENKATA MAKHIN wrote CHATURDANDI PRAKASHIKA which became bedrock of carnatic music
- Venkata Makhin devised the 72 MELAKARTHA raga system under which any raga: OLD, OBSOLETE, CURRENT or even of the FUTURE could be brought in.
- This scientific system was applied by VISHNU NARAYAN BHATKHANDE and he established ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF CARNATIK in Lucknow.
- Note: canara and Maidan area=> Canara: coastal area, western ghat, Maidan: deccan.
Components of Carnatic Music
- there are 3 components of vocal form of carnatic : RAGAM, TANAM, PALLAVI.
- Ragam is an elaborately improvised Aalapna(starts with simple then goes to end very difficult and it become more mesmerizing at end)
- Thanam is a bridge or JOD and it is rhythemic
- Pallavi is the final section which is composition of the words.
