Basics of Indian Classical Dance


Origin
  • the Mythological origin of Indian classical dance goes back to instruction of Brahma to Bharatmuni
  • Bhramha Instructed to create a Natyaveda, which was Amalgamation Dance, Drama & Music.
  • Natyaveda was created by taking
    • Pathya (Words) from Rigveda 
    • Abhinay (Acting) from Yajurveda
    • Geet(Music) from Samaveda
    • Rasa(Emotion) from Atharveda 
    • mnemonic : RYSA - PAGRA;
  • Indian Classical dance is also a universal spiritual manifestation. It denotes the element of FUSION with COSMOS and also liberation.

the earliest treatise on classical dance is Bharatmuni's NATYASASTRA which talks about ELEMENT & ASPECT.

 3 elements of Classical Dance
  • Nritta: it refers to pure dance step without any expression.
  • Natya : it is dramatic representation of story that is played in the background.
  • Nritya: it refers to fusion of NRITTA & NATYA, which includes expression and gestures and also dance movement.
  • any combination of the 3 or 2 can be used; the combinaton of Nritta and Natya is not accepted.
Aspects of Classical dance
  • Lasya: it is the faminine aspects of dance which denotes grace, bhav, soft and beautiful movement.
  • Thandava: this is the masculine aspect of dance which refers to aggression, firmnes & strength
    • the first Thandava was done by lord shiva.
    • Shiva's thandav refers to destruction of unorderly universe and at the same time creation of the orderly universe.
    • Shiva's thandav includes 2 parts; the agressive and destructive part is BHIRAV thandav. and thandav of Recreation is known as ANANDA THANDAV.
    • the 2nd important eg: of the thandav is Thandav dance of Lord Krishna is called Kaliya Nag;

NANDIKESHWAR in his book ABHINAYADARPAN elaborated upon Nayak - Nayika Bhav ie, use of emotion/RASA.
  • Rasa is indispensable part of classical dance
  • as such 9 Rasa's are used
    • Shringar: love, Karunya: compassion, Hasya: laughter, Vir: courage, Bibhatsa: Disgust, Bhayanak: horror, Shanti: Peace, Adbhut: Amazement
