Bharatnatyam (TN)
  • is the oldest classical dance form
  • derive its name from bharat muni & Bhav-Raga-Tala- Natyam
  • the orgin of this dance can be traced back to Devdasi system
    • Young girls were donated to the temples and then wedded to main god; and they were supposed to serve the god for whole of their life time
    • this dance is called as Dasiattam.
  • This dance form patronized by Arcot rulers of Madurai region.
Steps of the Bharatnatyam
  1. Alaripu : it is an invocatory piece where dancers seek blessings from the god.
  2. Jatiswaram: it is a pure dance movement without any expression
  3. Shabdam: It is the start of dramatic element and Abhinay
  4. Varnam: it is the elaboration of dramatic element and acting
  5. Padam: in this step mastery over the abhinay is expressed by the artist
  6. Jawali: it is the Nritya element of dance
  7. Tillana: it is very fast Joyous movement which manifest liberations
Specific Features of Bharatnatyam
  • Bharatnatyam shows the element of the fire in the dance
  • Mudras are very important part of the bharatnatyam.
    • one of the principle Mudra is Katak Hastra Mudra; in which 3 fingers are joined to symbolize OM ;

  • Ekacharya Lashyam: One dancer plays many different roles.
  • Nattuvanar: is the person who used to recite Mantras in the Bharatnatyam Dance performance.
  • the music accompanied is basically Carnatic.

  • Cymbol

  • Rukmini Devi Arundale:
    • is considered as one of the greatest person associated with Bharatnatyam.
    • She gave global recognition to Bharatnatyam.
    • She was also responsible for founding Wild Life Institute of India.
  • Yamini Krishnamurti, Padma Subhramanyam, Mrinalini Sarabhai, Mallika Sarabhai.
