Prehistoric Painting

Paleolithic
  • Aka. Cave painting
  • painting in human history first started during Paleolithic period
  • Painting was in Stick form or line diagrams => not scratched.
  • Vegetable colours is used: Red, Green, Yellow
  • Hunting figures were drawn
Mesolithic
  • Agriculture started
  • Microlith tools facilitated not only hunting and gathering but also  were used to scratch caves to create painting or rock cut architecture. => These paintings were known as Petroglyphs and Petrographs.
  • most dominated color: RED. (it is due to influence BLOOD. animal blood doesn't disappear so fast.) => obtained from bone marrow of animal. (they also used the remaining bone as weapon)
  • Theme of Mesolithic Rockcut architecture: Hunting and Gathering, Group Dance, Celebration, Riding Horses (site: Spain & Scotland )and Riding Animals (in India).
  • Mesolithic rock cut architecture of India not only reflect cultural life of the time but also a fine Aesthetic Sense comparable to modern painting. Critically Evaluate., 2015 mains.
Neolithic
  • Domestication of Plants and Animal.
    • Domestication of Plants=>seasonal & climatic agriculture
