About
  • Both were the spoken language of India during Mauryan period. but PRAKRIT existed much before that and it is considered as the ARCHAIC LANGUAGE OF INDIA
  • later during Buddhas time PALI became main language and in Mahavir' s influential areas PRAKRIT was the main language.

Buddhist Literature

Canonical (Most sacred and Reverred) => exclusively written in Pali
  • Sutta Pitaka
  • Vinaya Pitaka
  • Abhidamma Pitaka
Non Canonical => written in both Pali & Sanskrit
  • Jataka Stories
  • Buddhacharit in Sanskrit by Ashvaghosh
  • Therigatha
    • this is only text of that time which is written by women and attributed to women.
    • it talks about women's experience of Renunciation.
  • Sri Lankan Chronicle DIPAVAMSA & MAHAVAMSA comes under the category of non canonical pali text.

Jain Literature

 in 6 century AD after 2nd Jain council most of Jain text were compiled in Prakrit

  • Most of the Jaina text give detail account of Political history of eastern UP and adjoining areas in Bihar.
