- Both were the spoken language of India during Mauryan period. but PRAKRIT existed much before that and it is considered as the ARCHAIC LANGUAGE OF INDIA
- later during Buddhas time PALI became main language and in Mahavir' s influential areas PRAKRIT was the main language.

Jain Literature
in 6 century AD after 2nd Jain council most of Jain text were compiled in Prakrit
