Kathakali (Kerala)
  • Emerged from the many socio religious theatre form such as Ramanattam, Krishnanattam, Chakyarkoothu, Koothiyattam.
  • Kathakali as a dance format got patronage by many feudal lords of travancore.
  • The central theme use to happen from episodes of Ramayan & Mahabharat.
    • It is a blend of dance, music and acting and dramatizes stories, which are mostly adapted from the Indian  epics. It shows conflict between good and evil.

Features
  • Kathakali manifest element of SKY or ETHER.
  • performance takes place in open theatre or open premise.
    • It is usually Open-air stage covered with coarse mats.
    • Lightning is done through a brass lamp
  • Kathakali shows eternal conflict b/w good and evil
  • one of the important element of Kathakali is the representation of Rasa's or emotions through move ment of Eyes and eyebrows.

  • kathakali is also signified by the use of colours in make up (Elaborate facial makes up with head gear). Different colours have their own significance

    • Black -> Evil, Wickedness (Thamasik)
  • In kathakali there is minimal use of Props. (=> supporting things like ribbon, chair...etc)
